Micky's Cafe, Paddington

Fish of the day (ocean trout) $25.00
with sauteed spinach, onion and asparagus
on potato rosti with beetroot tzatziki

I love the outdoor dining area at Micky's, a cosy and welcoming arrangement of u-shaped benches on an outdoor patio filled with lush greenery. I only notice this seating area on a visit to the bathroom midway through lunch, a sight that imparts a sense of envy and wistfulness at what could or should have been.

It's a bit like the feeling I have about our lunch. My fish of the day, a fairly good-sized portion of ocean trout that has a lovely crisp skin, sits atop an impressive stack of bright green asparagus spears and a circle of potato rosti. Wisps of carrot and a dollop of beetroot tzatziki--in a hot fuschia pink--add to the spectacle.

So it's a shame, then, that the entire dish is bathed in an unnecessary slick of olive oil, a puddle that I end up soaking into my serviette, in a desperate attempt to enjoy the moist perfectly cooked ocean trout and the crisp fresh asparagus, in its own well-deserved simplicity.

The potato rosti is crunchy but in a deep-fried way, the disc shattering with alarming reverberations. It's not quite my interpretation of rosti, but as a thick potato crisp it's a winner.

Veal scallopine with mushroom sauce $26.00
served with chips and green salad

Veal scallopine is a lot closer to the mark but still somewhat heavy on the palate. The veal is reasonably tender and mushroom sauce and hot chips make for a rich but comforting combination.

Pineapple and mint frappe $5.50

A pineapple and mint frappe provides some welcome refreshment, a tall glass of lime green that is sweet with pineapple and zingy with mint.

Heavy stomachs means there's no room for dessert, even though I'm tempted by the Cherry Ripe slice and the Mars Bar cheesecake. The house blend of chai tea (using fresh ginger and Assam black tea) also goes begging.

A disappointing encounter, particularly as I'd heard so many good things. An off day perhaps? Here's hoping.

I think it is the norm rather than the exception...

I'm sorry it wasn't so great. Micky's is worth visiting just for the ice-cream sundaes, so maybe make that the purpose of your next visit? The burgers and fajitas are also great and filling, I've never been a fan of their attempts at 'restaurant food'.

Hi Belinda - I've heard lots of people rave on about Micky's so I was a tad disappointed. Breakfast and dessert seem to be quite the hit?

Hi yewenyi - I'm willing to give it one more chance, as long as it involves dessert :)

Hi Yas - Ahhh, thanks for the insight. Perhaps we'll make it an all-American date night next time. lol.

Yeah that courtyard is great. I am a smoker and day time coffee drinker. The staff a always really friendly and don't seem to mind that I never order any of the expensive stuff that you described.
But I always take my out-of-town friends there for coffee just to feel the atmosphere in that courtyard.
They sometimes order snacky stuff and seem to like it.
I remember the desserts being really exciting but overwhelmingly so.

Hi Nicholas - You can't beat a leafy well-designed courtyard, smoker or not! We were there for lunch and quite hungry but i'ts great to hear that snackers are just as welcomed :)

I think this cafe is highly overrated.

I've given it several chances as for some reason I really want to like it...but the food has been underwhelming each time.

I think its just popular because of its location, the fact it has a courtyard and that its reasonably priced given the other joints on oxford st

Hi Anon - I guess that things are always relative. I do like the courtyard - it's a welcome retreat!
