Harry's Cafe de Wheels, Woolloomooloo

Sure you can have a Harry's pie or hot dog in Haymarket or Ultimo, but you can't beat having one at the original Harry's Cafe de Wheels pie cart down in Woolloomooloo.

Darkness has fallen, you've had a few drinks, and there's a whole group of you starving and in need of a cheap feed. The lights on the pie cart are a welcoming beacon.

A few minutes in the queue and you have your dinner clutched tightly on a flimsy paper plate with crinkling greaseproof. We squish together on the log barriers lining the wharf, jostling for room whilst we balance our cargo.

Harry's Hot Dog de Wheels

Everything comes with a fork, the hot dog included. My curry tiger is bracingly spicy, but first there's a mound of mashed potato, a layer of mushy peas and a lake of thick brown gravy to get through first.

I grab my fork, and start digging.

yum, Harry's are the best pies in Sydney, and living around the corner from Hannah's hot pies is just great.

Other pies worth mentioning if yu can find them are those from Boscastle, I had one down in Melbourne and it was delicious, but they aren't all that easy to find in Sydney. Also, if you ever travel to Bateman's Bay, stop in for a pie at the East Lynne Roadhouse.

Further south, the Wharf pie from the bakery in Tathra is unusual (olives!) but yummy. A little inland from there you can also get a good pie from the bakery in Bemboka.

Of course, before you reach ANY of them, there is the Berry pie shop - a south coast institution.

yes, i like pies. a lot.

That pie looks absolutely delicious! Mushy peas and mashed potato make a pie the best ever! :) But I've never heard of a hot dog being served with a fork! Very ... interesting. :)

AG, it's easy to remember how to spell Woolloomooloo, all you have to remember is sheep, toilet, cow, toilet!

    Wool-loo-moo-loo

Oh, and I can make just about ANY road trip into a Pie road trip!
